Hunting Park Food Pantry Focuses On Providing Fresh, Nutritional Foods To Those In Need

By Kim Glovas

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The grand opening of a new food pantry in Hunting Park this week highlighted a focus on fresh, nutritional foods.

The Green Light Pantry at Casa Del Carmen Family Center on Reese Street has a focus that many other pantries are not meeting. Julie Zaebst is policy manager of the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger.

"We have a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables available to clients as well as frozen and canned fruits and vegetables that are low in sodium and fruits in their own juices, without added sugars, so really making sure to keep an eye on that nutritional content with everything they serve," Zaebst said.

Iron Chef and Restaurateur Jose Garces was also there, making fresh salsa and guacamole which was shared with all those attending. The pantry will also be offering nutrition classes to clients.

The Hunger Coalition says last year, nearly half a million people in the city went to a food pantry for help.
