Pickup Truck Slams Into Iconic Hymie's Deli In Lower Merion

By Al Novack and Jim Melwert

LOWER MERION, Pa. (CBS) - Authorities say a driver lost control and crashed into Hymie's Deli Thursday morning.

Shattered glass and furniture went flying as the red Dodge Ram pickup jumped the curb and slammed into a large store front window. There is a skid mark that swerves form the westbound lanes of Montgomery Avenue across oncoming traffic and then into the window of Hymie's Merion Deli. It looks almost as though the driver may have been swerving to miss something in the road, but there's no official word yet from accident investigators.

That pickup slammed through the large front window of Hymie's dining area shortly before 6am. Fortunately, that seating area wasn't opened when it happened.

Manager Harry Zeisler was in the deli area, getting ready for the day, when he says he heard the boom. He thought it was an explosion.

"Ran up here to the front of the store, saw the truck was rup here to this section right over here, all the way in here, and there was smoke coming out of the engine, there were fumes, and I think there was a little bit of gas leaking," Zeisler says the driver was a man in about his 30s and was conscious when paramedics took him to the hospital.

According to Lower Merion police, Montgomery Avenue was closed near Parsons Avenue because of the accident. It happened at about 5:50.

The truck was towed out of the store and building inspectors were called to check the building's structural integrity.

There are no reports of other injuries.
