Delco Man Charged With Skimming Tax Funds He Collected

By David Madden

ALDAN, Pa. (CBS) -- A former tax collector in Delaware County has been charged with collecting more than $1 million -- for himself.

Robert Park, 77, had been tax collector for his hometown of Aldan Borough and the William Penn School District for more than 20 years, until he resigned last November.

Defense attorney Art Donato says his client has admitted to skimming some $1.3 million over about a decade.  Donato says Park made investments, most of which went south with the overall market.

"He has been cooperating with the office of the district attorney of Delaware County in the investigation. He has been debriefed at length on several different occasions," Donato says.

Park is facing 20 criminal counts, including 19 felonies such as theft and receiving stolen property.

Donato expects his client to enter a guilty plea at some point and expects there to be a restitution order as part of any disposition.

Park, of Merion Avenue in Aldan, waived his preliminary hearing.  Bail was set at $250,000, unsecured.
