Let's Talk English

By Phran Novelli

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - According to the Pew Charitable Trusts 2013 report State of the City, 12.5% of our residents were born outside the US. Since 2000 the majority are from Asia and Latin America.

Learning to speak so that one can navigate the city, apply for a job or inquire about schools for their kids can be a great hurdle.

The Parkway Central Library, at 1901 Vine Street, has organized Let's Speak English for International adults, every Tuesday, 7:00-8:00 pm until the first week of September.

It's not a traditional class, no exams, just conversation and it's free!

Topics include holidays, customs, common slang, small talk and those suggested by the group. It's a way to make friends and practice speaking in a relaxing atmosphere.

Language can help a person 'fit in' so tell your neighbors and relatives who have immigrated to the region that "Let's Speak English" is a way to build confidence and belong!

To register call, 215-686-5330.
