Wayward Tire Slams Into Car On Schuylkill Expressway

By Steve Beck

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – This is one of those stories that you read and the only word that you can think of is "wow."

A driver on the Schuylkill Expressway escaped serious injury after a tire came loose from another car and slammed into the windshield of her car.

The freak incident happened at about 7 a.m. on the Schuylkill near the Girard Avenue exit.

A SUV that was traveling in the eastbound lanes lost its front driver side tire, sending the tire flying over the barrier that separates the eastbound and westbound lanes.

The tire then slammed into the windshield of a sedan that was traveling in the westbound lanes. The car's entire windshield was smashed in and half of the car's roof was ripped apart, leaving a gaping hole.

The driver was not seriously injured, but was taken to Temple University Hospital.

The SUV was spotted pulled over to the side of the road not too far from where it lost its tire.

The accident remains under investigation.
