3 On Your Side: Auto Insurance Discounts

By Jim Donovan

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - We all enjoy getting discounts, but are you getting all of the discounts that you deserve?

In a recent survey 30 percent of drivers questioned say they don't get any discounts on their auto insurance and another 10 percent said they weren't even sure.

"The average consumer has no idea how many potential ways they can save money on their car insurance," says Laura Adams, Senior Insurance Analyst with InsuranceQuotes.com. But she warns drivers that it's up to them to ask about discounts. "I think a lot of consumers are mistakenly under that impression that you know if they qualify for a discount that they are just going to get it. The reality is consumers need to be asking for discounts," says Adams.

So what are some of the discounts that drivers may be missing out on?

-- Bundling car insurance with a homeowner or renter policy will often result in savings.

-- Driving a car with certain safety features such as passive restraint systems and anti-lock brakes can result in a discount.

-- Many companies will cut you a small break if you receive your billing statements via email.

-- Even college or high school students who maintain at least a B average can get discounts of up to 25 percent.

And speaking of young drivers, Adams says, "Unfortunately about 34 percent of young drivers, these are folks between the ages of 18 and 29 , they seem to know the least about discounts and say they may be only getting 1 discount," when they could be entitled to more discounts. For instance did you know that if your college student attends a school that's more than 100 miles away from home, and doesn't bring a car - that can result in a discount?
