Expert Gives Advice On Best Foods To Eat During Oppressive Heat

By Kim Glovas

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - With the heat wave still with us, you might be wondering what kinds of foods are best to stay hydrated.

Libby Mills, with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, says there are some great summer foods that are filled with water and other nutrients.

She has compiled a list of her top five favorites.

"One of my favorites is a salad. Summer is for salads, and coming in at a hydrating 96-percent water, lettuce piles on potassium, a very necessary electrolyte for people who are active and beating the heat," she explains.

The other four are:

  • watermelon, coming in at 91-percent water,
  • grapefruit,
  • broccoli coming in with an unbelievable 98-percent water, uncooked; anD
  • believe it or not milk and yogurt.

Mills says milk and yogurt are 85-percent water and provide protein, calcium and vitamins A and D, plus electrolytes, phosphorus and potassium.
