Surgery Possible For Phillies Reliever Mike Adams
NEW YORK (AP) — Philadelphia Phillies right-hander reliever Mike Adams still feels discomfort in his pitching shoulder and might be headed for season-ending surgery.
Adams has been on the disabled list since June 21 with right biceps tendinitis. Phillies trainer Scott Sheridan said Adams was examined Thursday by team medical director Dr. Michael Ciccotti and plans to see Los Angeles Dodgers doctor Neal ElAttrache before deciding on his next move.
Sheridan said surgery is an option for Adams, who has been a top setup man when healthy. But he has been on the DL twice during his first season in Philadelphia, once for a strained back, after signing a $12 million, two-year contract in December.
The 34-year-old Adams is 1-4 with a 3.96 ERA in 28 games.
Sheridan also said Friday that left-hander Jeremy Horst (sprained left elbow) had a setback during a rehab outing for Triple-A Lehigh Valley and was examined in Florida by Dr. James Andrews, who recommended a platelet-rich plasma injection.
Horst will be shut down for four to six weeks and could miss the remainder of the season. He is 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA in 28 relief appearances.
Sheridan said pitcher Roy Halladay (right shoulder surgery) threw on flat ground Friday, and the session went very well. Ryan Howard has full range of motion following left knee surgery last week, and he is scheduled to have his stitches removed Tuesday.
Right-hander Michael Stutes, on the DL with biceps tendinitis, received a cortisone injection and probably won't resume throwing for two to three weeks, Sheridan said.
