Camden Man Sentenced In Fatal Atlantic City Carjacking-Robbery

MAYS LANDING, N.J., (CBS) – Prosecutors announced a Camden man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in a fatal Atlantic City casino garage carjacking.

According to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, 19-year-old Raheem Simmons was sentenced to 30 years in New Jersey State Prison for the murder of Sunil Rattu, 28, of Middlesex County, NJ.

Rattu was killed in September 2011 and his girlfriend wounded, in an alley not far from the casino parking garage where they were held up (see related story).

Simmons admitted to his role in the carjacking in Atlantic County Superior Court in March (see related story).

On Wednesday, the Court denied Simmons' motion to withdrawal his guilty plea. Prosecutors say in accordance with the plea agreement, Simmons was sentenced to 30 years in prison without the possibility of parole.

His two cohorts, Eric Darden and Philip Byrd, both 21, entered similar pleas earlier (see related story).  Darden will also do 30 years (related story).

Byrd has conceded that he fired the fatal shots, and was sentenced to a 47-year New Jersey State Prison term in June.

Darden's case concluded in February.
