Hundreds Pack Independence Mall For Fourth of July Tradition

By: Tim Jimenez

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Independence Mall was packed Wednesday night as many gathered for an annual Fourth of July holiday tradition.

It was a super night on the Mall as Peter Nero and the Philly Pops! performed on the eve of our nation's birthday.

"Oh I can't think of anything better," said Regina of Philadelphia.

Hundreds of people sat on blankets and lawn chairs, with a few snacks in hand.  Many said they look forward to this night under the stars.

"It's our annual tradition. This is our fourth year," said Shannon of South Philadelphia. She was joined by 15 family members and friends.

"The past five years we've been here. It really puts you in the spirit and it's so uplifting and it's such a wonderful place to be," said Lynn of Voorhees, N.J.

Whether it was their fifth time here or their first, many say they couldn't imagine being anywhere else.

"Where better to be on the Fourth of July?" said Ed Selby of New Jersey.

"Philadelphia is the birthplace of America and we are still celebrating the birth of America," said Regina.
