Michael Vick Surprised At Media Storm Over Starting QB Comments

By Marc Farzetta

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – During mini-camp Eagles quarterback Michael Vick started a media firestorm when he voiced his frustrations regarding Chip Kelly's quarterback competition.

"It's tough, I have to continue to be a professional and put my feelings and emotions to the side and just continue to compete. But it's hard. I would be lying if I said it wasn't. But that's just what I have to deal with, and I'm going to keep dealing with it until I see otherwise," he said.

Tuesday, Vick was making a guest appearance at Jeremy Maclin's youth football camp and found himself in front of reporters for the first time since making his thoughts known. Vick seemed shocked his comments received so much attention.

"Yeah, I was very surprised," Vick said. "Because I didn't try to say it in a derogatory way. I was just asked a question and I just answered the best way that I could."

Apparently the 10-year-NFL-vet was worried that his comments would reach beyond the ears of fans and reporters and make their way to his new head coach.

"Coach [Kelly] and I talked the next day, I sent him a text and he called me back and we talked and that was it. Everyone on that football team respects coach Kelly and like what he's been able to accomplish so far and he's grabbed the attention of the every body on our football team and we're just focused on trying to do what's best for this organization."

On another note, Vick was asked if there was anything that has surprised him about his first year head coach.

"I know coach won't take this the wrong way but I just didn't know coach was as educated about the game of football. About the sport in general. About what it takes to get the most out of every player in that locker room regardless of their talent. The things I've been able to learn and obtain mentally over the last 3 months is uncanny. I just appreciate that and we as players should appreciate him being here for us right now."

Eagles will hold their first full squad training camp session July 26th at the NovaCare Complex.
