Philadelphia Triathlon Gets New Layers Of Security, Entertainment

By Jim Melwert

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The 9th annual Philadelphia Triathlon takes place in Fairmount Park this weekend, but this year brings some changes to the race -- especially to security.

As security at big races around the country gets tighter, it's getting tighter here too. The large number of athletes setting up for the tri – the swim, bike and run -- creates a bit of a security nightmare, with all the bikes, shoes, wetsuits, towels and all kinds of other equipment that each racer is bringing into what's called the transition area here by the finish line.  For the first time, every backpack or duffle bag brought into the transition area will go through a security check.

But there's also a new level of fun here this year, says race spokeswoman Molly Quinn, as Philadelphia triathlon joins the TriRock series.

"TriRock is known for its music on the course, and its fun atmosphere post-race. We like to say 'come for the event and stay for the after party.' So, you're going to see a lot of those elements for the participants."

That includes live music on the race-course with a Philadelphia theme.

There are races both Saturday and Sunday, with Sunday being the higher profile race with some of the top pro's in the country taking part.

There will be road closures on both sides of the river – especially on Sunday when Kelly Drive, and Eakins Oval will be closed, along with several other streets around the park.
