Beach-Goers Should Do Their Homework When Finding Summer Rentals

By Robin Culverwell

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – 'Tis the season for summer rentals, and with them come warnings for those looking for a place to stay.

The "buyer beware" adage could apply to anyone looking to stay down the shore.

This week's arrest of a property owner in Cape May County on charges he ripped off would-be renters serves as a reminder that beach-goers need to do their homework before signing on the dotted line.

Melissa Companick is the president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau of New Jersey.

"You can do a Google search and try and get do a background search on the person before you do business with them, and then we always say get everything in writing," said Companick.

When it comes to cancellation policies, Companick says recourse varies from contract to contract, but her best advice is to work with a reputable person or company and read all the fine print before signing on the dotted line.
