Philly Beer Week Kicks Off

By Justin Udo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Beer was the main attraction at the Independence Visitor Center as the sixth annual Philly Beer Week kicked off its festivities.

"Ladies and gentleman, the 2013 official Philadelphia Beer Week is underway," said Mayor Michael Nutter.

Dozens gathered as Nutter hoisted the ceremonial sledgehammer and tapped the first keg of Philly Beer Week.

Over the next 10 days, area restaurants, pubs, and bars are hosting beer week festivities and events.

The people I talked with all had different things they were looking for out of their beer.

"I'm definitely looking forward to sampling some of the Pennsylvania breweries," said one Philly Beer Week enthusiast.

"I'm looking forward to this beer fest just to see the new types of breweries that might be popping up and any kind of special beers that catch my eye," said another.

John Ahrens better known as "Alt Man Ahrens" knows just what beer he wants to taste.

It's a beer brewed in honor of him from the folks at Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant.

"It's an alt beer and it's in honor of my 70th birthday, which is coming up on June 6th," said Ahrens.

Philly Beer Week runs until June 9th.
