Heat Wave Slows Down SEPTA Trains

By Jim Melwert

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - According to the forecast, today's temperatures are going to make this the first official heat-wave of 2013.

It'll be another day of highs in the 90's, and not much relief in sight for the weekend. People like Sharon from Southwest Philly say they'll just deal with it, it's just obnoxious this early in the year.

"Unfortunately, I work in a kitchen so the kitchen is hot all day, and then when I come outside, it's hotter.  I just get home as fast as I can and the air conditioner is already on."

But not everyone's grumbling about the heat, some people like this woman like it: "I love it. I love it. To tell you the truth I do.  Winter, I can't do it.  But I love summer, especially the hot and humid."

The early heat is also slowing down mass-transit, SEPTA says they're reducing the maximum speed for some trains, as the heat can cause power lines to expand and sag. Also, tracks can expand, especially a problem when there's a dramatic change in temperatures like we saw this week from cool to hot.

That can also have an effect on us, as our bodies haven't had time to adjust to the high temperatures, so remember if you're outside this weekend, to be careful in the heat.
