The runnerup spot went to another of the weekend's new attractions, another sequel – The Hangover Part III – starring Bradley Cooper and Zack Galifiniakis. It debuted with a strong $42-million.
Third place belonged to last weekend's leader, also a sequel – Star Trek Into Darkness – which added $38-million to its cumulative total.
The weekend's third new release, the animated adventure, Epic, placed fourth with a more-than-respectable $34-million opening.
Overall, with four titles surpassing the $30-million mark, the top twelve titles easily set the all-time Memorial Day Weekend record.
