City Council Skeptical About Nutter's Property Assessors; Hires Auditor

By Mike Dunn

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - City Council wants to put Mayor Nutter's property assessors under the microscope.

The Office of Property Assessment has already released what officials say was the methodology used in creating the new assessments, but that has not satisfied council members like Bobby Henon:

"Right now, they're not releasing the information; we don't feel comfortable with it," he said.

So Council plans to hire an independent auditor to look at OPA's operation:

"For real checks and balances, I think the audit is a direct, precise and concise way to get proper data that we still have yet to receive," Henon said.

The mayor's spokesman says the Administration will respond to the idea when a council committee reviews the proposal. Several council members have said they feel the amount of errors in the new assessments exceeds industry standards.
