Non-Conventional Housing Forum At Academy Of Natural Sciences

By Kim Glovas

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Academy of Natural Sciences is hosting a free forum tonight at 6pm on different kinds of non-conventional housing and how it can help in challenged communities, like inner cities.

The idea is that non-conventional housing can help address environmental and economic change. Sara Steele, coordinator for the event at the Academy of Natural Sciences, says one of the speakers is Bridgette Meinhold who has written a book on housing solutions for a changing world.

"She has gathered 40 examples from around the world of all kinds of sustainable design for emergency housing, things like Katrina, tsunamis, natural disasters, things that can be delivered instantaneously after the disaster."

Steele says with sustainability, a major goal of the Nutter Administration, this may give the city some new ideas for low income housing with materials already available.
