Police: Family Kept More Than 80 Animals Inside Pa. Mobile Home

EPHRATA, Pa. (AP) — Three people are facing criminal charges after police say they were discovered to be living in a mobile home with an infant, two other people and more than 80 animals.

Ephrata Police said Tuesday they filed charges of endangering the welfare of children against Pearl Herman, William Herman and Robert Paul Herman, and animal cruelty charges against the men.

Lt. Thomas Shumaker says the animals included turtles, potbellied pigs, chickens, exotic birds, ducks, cats and dogs.

Shumaker says the animals defecated throughout the mobile home, and some needed veterinary care. The home was condemned.

The defendants did not appear to have listed phone numbers. William and Pearl Herman live in Harrisburg, and Robert Herman lives in Ephrata.

Police say the conditions were discovered April 3, and charges were filed Monday.
