Delaware DMV Warns Residents About Potential Phone Scam

WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS) – The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles is warning the public about a potential phone scam.

According to the DMV, there have been numerous reports of residents being called by an automated message that claims the resident can save significant money off their auto insurance rates. It also claims that information provided by the Delaware DMV has allowed them to research the resident's insurance history and permitted them to contact the resident.

The DMV says it does not and will not share its customers' personal information to an outside agency and that the message's claim about receiving insurance from the DMV is false. The organization is asking any Delaware residents who receive a call like this to ignore it and hang up.

The Fraud Unit of the Delaware Insurance Commissioner's Office has been alerted to these cases and is currently investigating.
