Jury Deliberations Near 2 Week Mark In Abortion Doctor Trial

By Tony Hanson

PHILADELPHIA (CBS)  --  After 8 grueling weeks of trial and deliberations, the jury in the murder trial of abortion Dr. Kermit Gosnell returns to work today for a 10th day of deliberations.

The jury is considering a long list of charges, including five counts of murder.

Four for babies allegedly born alive and then murdered, and one for a woman who allegedly died of a medication overdose during an abortion at the clinic.

Jury questions suggest the panel has worked methodically through the verdict sheet.

They spent about three days on co-defendant Eileen O'Neill, who treated patients without a valid doctor's license

She is charged with theft by deception and other offenses.

She has pleaded not guilty.

Then the jury turned to Doctor Kermit Gosnell, with questions about the law and read backs of testimony from clinic workers who admitted to murder, and implicated the doctor.

Gosnell has also pleaded not guilty.

The defense contends the babies were not born alive and the woman died as the result of an adverse drug reaction.

The jury is also considering hundreds of other counts of violations of Pennsylvania's informed consent waiting period and two dozen counts of abortion of an unborn child of 24 weeks or more.
