Philadelphia City Controller Candidates Blast Each Other During Hour-Long Debate
By Special Contributor Larry Kane
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It has been an angry contest in which incumbent Alan Butkovitz is being challenged by Brett Mandel and Mark Zecca.
In our debate between Butkovitz and challenger Mandel, Butkovitz begins by defending his office from charges of being unethical.
"We've received national awards and just because Brett Mandel is ambitious, he uses the worst kind of slander, the worst kind of Joe McCarthy tactics, and he says it and he repeats it. But he will not address his own ethics; the fact that he's getting a $40,000 free campaign gift that he uses as the basis of his campaign," Butkovitz says.
Reporter: "What is that?"
"He's talking about the fact that a volunteer helped me build the Bulldog Budget at budget.brettmandel.com , so you can see a completely transparent view of what the city budget is doing and what's being spent. Alan is incorrect. First of all, we didn't take down any information. Every piece of information is right there on the website," Mandel explains.
