Delaware County Man Accused Of 1981 Sex Abuse At Cape Cod Camp

BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) — A Pennsylvania man is charged with sexually assaulting underage youths at a Cape Cod camp decades ago.

District Attorney Michael O'Keefe said 65-year-old Richard P. Smith of Media, Pa., was arraigned Monday on charges including rape of a child and indecent assault and battery on a child under 14.

O'Keefe said the four alleged victims, ages 11 to 15, attended Camp Good News in Sandwich in 1981 when Smith was a counselor.

Prosecutors began investigating allegations of abuse at the camp two years ago after then-Sen. Scott Brown wrote in a memoir he'd been molested at a Christian summer camp on Cape Cod in the 1970s. He didn't name it or pursue charges. Camp Good News later said Brown had attended there and apologized.

Smith's bail was set at $10,000. It's not known if he has a lawyer.
