Stomach Bug Rips Through Delaware County School Affecting More Than 100 Students

By Jenn Bernstein

WAYNE, Pa. (CBS) -- What appears to be a bad stomach bug is ripping through a small school in Wayne.

A little more than 120 children and three teachers were out sick Thursday at Saint Katharine of Siena School in Wayne. That's out of the 444 students and 35 teachers who attend and teach at the kindergarten through 8th grade school.

Principal Bud Tosti said he called in the Pennsylvania Department of Health to help the school figure out what is causing students and teachers to come down with symptoms, which include stomach aches, vomiting and diarrhea.

"It seems we've been hit with a pretty good stomach bug, that's what we're led to believe," said Principal Tosti. "We went from 12 kids out on a Tuesday, to 120 out or we sent home yesterday."

Principal Tosti says five teachers were also out Wednesday.

The school has gone through boxes of Lysol and Clorox wipes and hand sanitizers are everywhere, according to the principal.

"Our classrooms are a little bit thin, but we're hoping that it ends itself pretty quickly and we'll be back to full scale hopefully, at least by Monday," said Tosti.
