Rowan University Student Struck, Killed By Driver

GLASSBORO, N.J., (CBS) - Glassboro Police say a Rowan University student was struck and killed by a driver on Friday.

The incident happened at about 12:30 a.m. on State Street.

Matthew Uhl of Little Egg Harbor, was transported to the hospital with a serious brain injury.

University officials confirmed Uhl died of his injuries on Friday afternoon.

Police say the driver, Derrick D. Gilliam, of Bridgeport, Connecticut, was still on the scene with the vehicle when they arrived.

According to authorities, Gilliam had an odor of alcohol on his breath and there was an open bottle of vodka on the floor of the back seat of his vehicle.

Gilliam is currently being held at Gloucester County Jail in lieu of $25,000 full cash bail.

The crash remains under investigation.

Police are also trying to identify a passenger in Gilliam's car, who left the scene prior to officer's arrival.
