Jay Lloyd's Getaway: 'Bare' Boat Charters

By Jay Lloyd

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (CBS) -- With the arrival of warm weather, now is the time to book a Chesapeake sailing getaway or risk being left out in the cold.

Don't have a boat?  That's OK -- think about "bareboating."  It's exciting and dynamic, but not as sexy as it sounds.

It simply means that you're renting a boat, just like a car or a house at the shore.  The "bare" part is that you skipper and run it yourself -– no hired crew.

Then, just let the wind fill your sails and set a course for places like Baltimore's Inner Harbor, Annapolis, St. Michaels, or dozens of snug anchorages in between.

But first, get ready to Google.  Two charter companies I like, with diversified fleets, are Haven Charters in Rock Hall, Maryland and Annapolis Bay Charters at Annapolis.

If you don't yet have the skill to qualify, look up the Annapolis Sailing School or the Maryland School of Sailing. You'll have a great time learning, and a lifetime of adventure to follow.
