TOMS RIVER, N.J. (CBS) -- Police confirm that a six-year-old boy who was accidentally shot in the head by a four-year-old neighbor has died.

Toms River Police say they received the call at about 6:42 p.m. to McCormick Drive on Monday night.

Investigators say the four-year-old boy somehow got a hold of a .22 caliber rifle from inside a home and brought it into a yard, where it went off, striking the six-year-old.

It was not immediately known if the four-year-old pulled the trigger or if the rifle accidentally discharged.

The six-year-old was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center in serious condition where he later died from his injuries.

The shooting remains under investigation.
