Weekend Box Office: Dominated By A Remake, A Re-Release, And A Sequel
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — This weekend, multiplexes were for revisiting, as three of the top four attractions were a remake, a re-release, and a sequel.
Evil Dead was alive at the box office in the form of a horror redo of the 1981 original about demonic possession. It debuted in first place at the box office, earning an estimated $26 million in its first weekend.
Holdovers tied for the next spot:
The animated adventure, The Croods, and the action-thriller sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, each took in $21 million.
Fourth place, at $18 million, went to the re-release of the Steven Spielberg thriller, Jurassic Park, in 3D.
Overall, with six films breaking the $10-million mark, the box office was up over last year's counterpart total.
