Pedestrian Struck, Killed By Police Vehicle In Delaware

WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS) – Officials say a 49-year-old man was struck and killed by a police vehicle early Saturday morning.

The incident occurred just after 4:05 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Kirkwood Highway, east of Farrand Drive, in Wilmington, Delaware.

Police say 49-year-old Robert G. Smith, of Wilmington, was attempting to cross Kirkwood Highway when he was struck by a fully marked patrol vehicle, driven by a 43-year-old Delaware State Trooper.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer was not injured.

The Delaware State Crash Reconstruction Unit says that alcohol may have been a factor for the pedestrian.

The incident is still being investigated.
