Worker Killed In Freak Accident At Bucks County Sugar Plant

FALLS TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) -- A worker died after he fell into a sugar vat at a processing plant in Falls Township, Bucks County Monday afternoon.

Police say they received a call from workers at the CSC Sugar plant shortly after 2:30 p.m. to report a missing co-worker. The man's car was still in the parking lot, but he had not been seen for about one hour. A short time later, the man's pants were found inside a sugar hopper, which is where his body was eventually found by firefighters.

Authorities say the victim, identified as 50-year-old Janio Salinas Valerda of Edgewater, New Jersey, was on a cat-walk above the hopper when he apparently slipped and fell.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine if Valerda suffered a medical condition prior to his fall.

Police say there is no indication of foul play.

The investigation is ongoing.
