Local Group Holds Fun Run/Walk To Promote Healthier Lifestyle

By Cherri Gregg

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The GrassROOTs Community Foundation has localized the First's Lady's efforts to get young folks moving. Saturday they are holding a neighborhood run, health fair and concert featuring members of The Roots.

GrassROOTs helps educate Philadelphians on how to love healthier lifestyles.

"In an unsafe neighborhood, people do not have the opportunity to use the neighborhoods to use the streets to walk and run. We want to be able to reclaim those streets," says Dr. Janis Johnson Dias, who started the organization with Tarik Trotter of the Roots.

She says the one mile morning run/walk along Frankford Avenue will help reclaim the streets for healthy activities.

"The morning begins with a one mile fun run/walk. Black Girls Run Philadelphia will participate with us. The 15th District Police officers will clear the way," says Dr. Johnson Dias.

It kicks off at 11 a.m., along with free food, a health fair and HIV Testing.

Then Saturday night there's a benefit concert emceed by Black Thought with performances featuring Marsha Ambrosious, Ursala Rucker and other super stars.
