Council Rock Holds School Security Forums For Parents

By Mark Abrams

NORTHAMPTON, Pa. (CBS) -- Bucks County's Council Rock School District is planning three community forums on school security in the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut shootings.

Council Rock Superintendent Mark Klein says the first of the forums is scheduled for Monday night at 7 in the Hillcrest Elementary School in Northampton.

Klein says while Council Rock is always evaluating its security environment, the events in Connecticut last month offer the district here an opportunity.

"To take a breath and actually have a conversation with our community about what they expect, what kinds of things might be options and what kinds of things would not be is worth that time and effort before we actually go to implementation," Klein explained.

And, Klein says the input of parents is crucial.

"There's no greater stakeholder in the way that we conduct our business in schools than the parents who trust their children with us for 5, 6, 7 hours a day or longer depending on after-school activities."

He says the school board will move before spring to adopt the best recommendations which it feels will boost the protection for the more than 11-thousand students and staff in Council Rock buildings.

Council Rock School District security forums:

Monday, Jan. 14 - 7 p.m. - Hillcrest Elementary School, 420 E. Holland Road, Northampton.

Tuesday, Jan. 22 - 7 p.m. - Maureen M. Welch Elementary School, 750 New Road, Northampton.

Wednesday, Jan. 30 - 7 p.m. - Newtown Middle School, 116 Richboro Road, Newtown Township.
