Fancy Brigades Go All Out
By Cherri Gregg
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Some of the Mummers brought their performances on Broad Street inside the Pennsylvania Convention Center for the Fancy Brigade finale.
Hundreds gathered to watch the ten Fancy Brigades dance in colorful feather laced costumes, alongside 50-foot moving sets with themes ranging from futuristic cyborgs to the Mayan Apocolypse.
"This competition is a about bragging rights for New Years Day."
Bill Burt is the vice president of the Fancy Brigade Association, which has put on the competition for more than 50 years. He says there are strict rules to getting the right to brag.
"Our costumes have to be new every year, you need at least 30 members and 1/3 of them have to be over age 18."
Each group then gets 4.5 minutes to impress the judges. Vince performed with the 2nd Street Shooters and says they'd been rehearsing since last April - and for good reason.
"Definitely high energy, fast paced-dancing, lots of formation."
Judges will choose the winner after the 5 p.m. show.
