Caring For Your New Puppy

By Nan Talleno

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Puppies are adorable but since they are babies, they certainly need plenty of care throughout the day. In fact, there are a few things you need to do before bringing your new little puppy home. First, make sure your home is puppy-proofed and safe. They're naturally curious and can't be blamed for any misadventures so it's up to us to keep their environment safe.

Make sure that all loose wires are removed or taped to the baseboards. Tie curtain strings together and keep away from puppy's reach. Remove all plants, cleaning liquids and household chemicals and keep all small and breakable items out of reach. When in doubt, get down to your puppy's level for a puppy's eye view to check out any hidden dangers you may have missed.

Make sure to take your new best friend to the vet after adoption, even though he/she may have had initial vaccinations done at the shelter, it's important to schedule a visit with your vet for a thorough check-up and a clean bill of health.

Get your puppy started on a healthy nutritious diet from the start. Make sure it's natural and healthy food, appropriate for your young dog's age requirements and read all the ingredients to make sure there are no fillers and by-products.
