500 Plants Seized During Marijuana Bust In Philadelphia

By Tim Jimenez

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Authorities say they seized 500 pounds of marijuana during a drug bust in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia.

Three-hundred-forty-three full grown marijuana plants, 150 plants in the incubation stage and three large bags of cut marijuana. That's what police say they found in a home on the 2300 block of Frankford Avenue on Thursday.

That's where police also arrested 41-year-old Vinh Nguyen. In total, police say he had over 500 pounds of marijuana in his home, with a street value of $3,000 to $10,000 a pound.

Police say there was an elaborate electrical wiring system for heat lamps, and investigators say they found two pots of boiling water with fabric softener attached to the vent system to hide the strong odor of marijuana.

Nguyen also has two young kids, and police say their beds were just 15 feet away from the rooms with the pot in them.

Now, Nguyen is being held on $1 million bail. The DA's office is charging him with possession with intent to distribute, risking a catastrophe, endangering the welfare of a child and a related offense.
