Police: Hunt Continues For Driver In Southwest Philadelphia Fatal Hit And Run

By Jim Melwert, Al Novack, Jenn Bernstein

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A woman was killed when she was hit by a car while crossing the street in Southwest Philadelphia. Now, police are hunting for the driver of the SUV that hit her.

Police say they were able to locate the SUV about seven blocks away by following leaking fluid. But they say the driver had run off.

The SUV was badly damaged, the grill missing, the hood dented and the windshield smashed, but the driver kept going, police say, after he or she hit a woman who was crossing Chester Avenue near 48th Street last night a little after 10 p.m.

The 52-year-old woman died from her injuries.

Police say the silver Chevy SUV has New York tags. The hunt continues for the driver.

It's upsetting news for residents like Sam, who says, "It's terrible. Nobody ever stops here. I mean trolleys hit cars, cars hit cars, they really need to replace the stops signs and put up red lights."

Other neighbors agree.

(Neighbor #1) "There's always an accident right here, they never follow these stop signs."
(Neighbor #2) "Oh no, they blow through them."
