2 Violent Robbery Gang Members Sentenced

By Tony Hanson

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Key figures in a violent, ruthless robbery gang have been sentenced to several lifetimes in prison. The defendants, both in their 20's, were convicted of their roles in about a dozen armed pharmacy and home invasion robberies in 2009 and 2010.

John Bowie has been sentenced to 246 years in prison and co-defendant Emmanuel Duran has been sentenced to 240 years in prison for crimes that brutalized, tortured and terrorized victims.

Prosecutor Arlene Fisk says one man was shot in the leg, another victim was burned with an iron and stabbed; women and children were all targets.

"A young women who was six months pregnant, who did not respond quickly enough to his demand that she hit the ground, was thrown down to the ground with such force that after the robbery she had to be rushed to the hospital and she was afraid she was going to miscarry and she spent several days in the hospital," says Fisk.

He says the baby was okay. Two other co-defendants were sentenced earlier this week to nearly 130 years in prison.
