Block Party Beerfest Takes Over South Street

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - South Street between Broad and 18th Streets in Center City was blocked off Saturday afternoon for the 5th annual Bloktoberfest.

"This is the second year on South Street and its grown from a tiny festival with only a few hundred people attending to a festival this year that we think will have maybe 15,000 people attending," said Bloktoberfest planning committee member Chris Durham.

He explained what goes on during the annual event.

"We have an assortment of beer, food, music, and most importantly all the people that make the city great," he said. "It is a block party and you know, it's not modeled on the German Oktoberfest, but I think that's the theme we're trying to convey to people and that's why Bloktoberfest is not spelled with a "c" so it's b-l-o-k-toberfest."

Even though the festival celebrates the beers of Oktoberfest, there were also a lot of kids out participating in the kid zone activities.

"They are painting pumpkins right now," Durham said. "This is a very family friendly environment, kids are out, people have their dogs here!"

Durham adds that this is a non-profit festival with all the proceeds going back to the community.
