3 On Your Side: Best Buys In October

By Jim Donovan

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – When it comes to shopping, October is a strange month. After all, it's right before the biggest shopping season of the year. But you can still score some impressive deals.

There are certain things you should buy in October and three things you might want to wait to purchase.

When it comes to knowing when to shop and what to buy, the experts at DealNews.com have it down to a science.

"We look at the past 3 years, so there are certain trends that keep popping up," said Lindsay Sakraida, with DealNews.com.

Need a costume for Halloween? Timing is everything if you want a deal.

"We actually noticed that in the week before Halloween, many stores tend to offer modest sales on a variety of costumes and decorations," said Sakraida.

Need a pair of jeans? Now is the time to act.

"The sales that you saw in September are only going to get more aggressive in October because the stores really want to move that remaining inventory. Its' been there for a while," explained Sakraida.

Car buyers will find bargains in October, too.

"A lot of experts say you can save 10 to 20 percent off on last year's models, especially if it's a model that's going to be discontinued," said Sakraida.

What are some things you should wait to buy? Electronics and appliances are at the top of the list.

"Most electronics are actually going to see some of their best prices around Black Friday, but also, some people don't realize that large appliances for your kitchen -- maybe a washer/dryer, a washing machine for your laundry. Those see really good door-buster sale prices in November as well," said Sakraida.

And even though there's a chill in the air, the best deals on cold weather apparel won't happen until the January or February clearance sales.
