Iron Chef Garces' Family To Create Foundation For Immigrants

By Kim Glovas

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – You've heard of Philadelphia's Iron Chef restaurateur, Jose Garces. But have you heard about his wife?

Beatriz Garces is now in the spotlight as the couple prepares to unveil a new foundation benefiting immigrants.

Beatriz Garces is a dentist in Old City. She's been offering discounted and sometimes free dental service to immigrants facing hard times. But now she and husband Jose, are doing something bigger.

They are creating the Garces Family Foundation to give back to the community.

"This is why we decided to embark on this mission, so that we can build a center where any ethnic group can go to and get help in these very important areas," Beatriz explains.

Those important areas include dental, medical and psychological services as well as after school programs for children, English as second language classes for adults and cooking classes to learn how to eat healthy meals.

The foundation will debut October 10th at the Kimmel Center. The Garces hope to raise one million dollars to build the new center at 1700 South Street.
