Firefighters Sell Cheesesteaks For Hero Fund

By Michelle Durham

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philadelphia Firefighters are hoping many hungry people will show up on Friday at a local Northeast Philly pub. Firefighters are taking over the kitchen to fry cheesesteaks for a good cause.

The 5th annual "Cheesesteaks for Heroes" benefits the Hero Thrill Show Scholarship fund, which pays the college educations of children of police and firefighters killed in the line of duty.

"You can come to SmokeEaters pub at Frankford and Sheffield in the Great Northeast! Each Cheesesteak is $5," Lieutenant Mike Foley said.

The kitchen is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Foley says the officers and firefighters that have been lost are always top of mind.

"It's been a tragic year for both departments and I feel it's important that we do everything we can to support the families of our police and firefighters."

Foley says the generosity of the residents makes everyone smile.

"People make donations. I can't express people that are just so generous. They'll be a $5 cheesesteak and they'll drop $20 into the bin there. That's the spirit of these fine citizens in Philadelphia."
