CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) - Reverend John Parker of the Ferry Methodist Church in Camden led dozens of neighbors in prayer Tuesday night.

"Our hearts are heavy, so much so that we can't even bring forth tears," said Reverend Parker.

Camden community members, neighbors and family friends gathered on the 600 block of Ware Street to remember 6-year-old Dominick Andujar.

Singing and lighting candles, they walked to the families home where Dominick was killed early Sunday morning in his bedroom, and his 12-year-old sister critically injured. Their necks were slashed.

"We're praying for (the girl) and the whole family," said Barbara Lowe who's grandson played with Dominick everyday.

Thirty-one-year old Osvaldo Rivera appeared in court. He's charged with murder and attempted murder for the attack on Dominic and his sister. The 12-year-old told police Rivera tried to rape her. Investigators say Dominic was distracting Rivera so his sister could get away. Authorities say Rivera told police he had smoked "wet" a PCP laced marijuana.

"That's what the churches of our city need to do, is come together and pray," said Rev. Parker.
The community surrounded Dominick's doorstep. His mother and father were overcome with grief and moved by the outpouring of support. There was a tide of emotion.

"What is this world turning to when kids are losing their lives?"
asked Neighbor Tanya Harris, holding a candle and standing with dozens other in front of the family's stoop, now a memorial to a young life cut short.
