CBS 3 Program To Air In 175 Countries, U.S. Territories

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The American Forces Network (AFN), provider of programming to American service men and women, civilians and their families serving overseas, has chosen a CBS 3 special commemorating the 225th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution for broadcast on its network airing worldwide beginning later this month.

We The People: The Constitution's 225th, produced in partnership with the National Constitution Center, has been airing on CBS stations across the country since its July 4th weekend debut in Philadelphia. As part of the AFN agreement, the show will now air in 175 countries and U.S. territories from Afghanistan to Kazakhstan, Turkey to Tunisia beginning August 26th through the end of the year.

The half-hour program, hosted by Anchors Chris May and Susan Barnett, takes a look at the lesser-known moments and behind-the-scenes players at the Constitutional Convention in 1787. Features include a discussion with Constitutional history expert and National Constitution Center Board member Dr. Richard Beeman who talks about the negotiations that led to the final document; a tour of the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia; a visit to a high school where the curriculum has been built around the Constitution, and a man-on-the street pop quiz on the test that those seeking to become Americans need to pass in order to become U. S. citizens. Most timely is a look at the Constitution's ability to be redefined as society changes through the use of Amendments, how current issues, such the definition of marriage, might play out in future amendments.

"We are so honored that our local program has not only been picked up by CBS stations across the United States but will now be seen by Americans stationed all around the world," says Jon Hitchcock, President and General Manager of CBS 3 and its sister station, The CW Philly. "We hope this 'touch of home' will resonate with them as much as it did with us and that they will share the pride we feel in being able to showcase the document that makes us who we are."

"As the headquarters of the Constitution's 225th anniversary, the National Constitution Center could not be more pleased that America's service men and women will join in this milestone celebration of the ideals they so bravely support and defend," says National Constitution Center President and CEO David Eisner. "It is a tremendous honor to be featured as part of this terrific special from CBS, and we are thrilled that viewers worldwide can draw inspiration from the Constitution and its legacy of freedom."
