Veteran Philadelphia Police Officer Indicted For Providing Sensitive Info To Drug Dealers

By Kim Glovas

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A 23-year Philadelphia police veteran turned himself in to federal authorities Wednesday morning after an indictment was returned. The indictment alleges the officer provided sensitive information about ongoing drug investigation to dealers.

Fifty-one-year-old Rafael Cordero worked in the Police Criminal Intelligence unit until he was removed in July, 2011. Assistant U.S. Attorney Maureen McCartney says Cordero's connection to the drug dealers was through a half-brother.

"His half-brother was the subject of part of an investigation into drugs trafficking," McCartney says. "And he came to the attention of the DEA and FBI as a result of that investigation."

The indictment alleges that Cordero told his half-brother David Garcia about movement by federal agents. It also says Cordero denied giving Garcia any information, or passing on information to Garcia about cooperating witnesses in the investigation.

Cordero is also charged with hiding money from the drug ring at his home.
