Study Finds Concerning Side Effects In Popular Baldness Drug

By Brian McDonough

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A medication called Finasteride has gotten a great deal of attention over the years for helping treat male pattern baldness. It goes by the brand name Propecia.  A new report in the Journal of Sexual Medicine took a look at the side effects of Propecia and it found that there are concerns about sexual function. Problems such as sexual side effects, including decreased libido, ejaculatory changes, and depression.

The report, from the George Washington University School of Medicine, says not all men fight with this, but in their study of 54 healthy men -- who were about 31 years of age -- it was a significant concern.

If you are considering using the medication, you should discuss it with your physician.
