By Robin Rieger and Stasia DeMarco

MILLVILLE, N.J., (CBS) – A Millville patrolman was killed in the line of duty Sunday morning.

Patrolman Christopher Reeves of the Millville Police Department was killed in a motor vehicle accident while on duty at 2:15 a.m.

The accident happened at the intersection of North 3rd and East Broad Street in Millville, N.J.

The ongoing investigation is being handled by New Jersey State Police and the Cumberland County prosecutor's office.

"The incident is very sad, and we are praying for officer Reeve's family," County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb McRae said.

Sunday night, residents, many of whom heard the crash, started a memorial in Millville.

"It was really bad, like pieces of the cop car was all over and the other car", said Jennifer Rivera, who lives nearby.

Millville police hung black bunting on their station and lowered their flag as did the Millville fire company, where Reeves was a volunteer fireman for a year.

Reeves was a 1991 graduate of Millville High School and joined the department in 2004.

His wife, Susan Reeves, is also a Millville police officer.

Officer Reeves was an eight-year veteran of the force.
