Many Travel To See Annual Tapping Of The Liberty Bell

BY Suzanne Monaghan

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Independence Day in Philadelphia wouldn't be complete without the annual tapping of the Liberty Bell.
The Independence Day bell tapping honors the anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence and the 56 signers.

For Barbara Zimmel, it had a special significance this year.

"We were very blessed, four of our grandchildren were the tappers of the Liberty Bell and their descendant is Phillip Livingston."

Eight decedents of four of the signers were joined by some lawmakers and two new U.S. citizens who wore white gloves and lightly tapped this symbol of freedom and hope 13 times to represent the 13 original colonies.
