Many Still Searching For The Perfect Father's Day Gift

By Jericka Duncan

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - As Father's Day approaches, many people are still searching for that perfect gift. Eyewitness News spoke to a number of dads about what's hot and what's not this year.

"The ties, horrible ties that I always see people have," said Ricky Surmon of West Philadelphia. He says whenever people give ties on Father's Day, it feels like little thought went into the gift.

"I have plenty of ties," said Ed Brice of East Mt. Airy. "As long as my wife and kids are happy, that's what really matters."
Monica Mandell specializes in matchmaking, but after 24 years of marriage, she considers herself quite the expert when it comes to looking for that perfect Father's Day gift.

"Yes pajamas and bedroom slippers are nice but dad wants something fun and different and exciting," said Mandell.

Mandell recommends electronic gadgets like a tablet or smartphone to keep dad hip and cool.

"People are having kids a little later in life, so we want to keep the dad's young and with the times," Mandell explained.

Timing is everything at Govberg in Suburban Square in Ardmore. G-Shock watches start at $100. If you start saving now, maybe, one day you could present your dad with a Patek Phillipe watch. It's considered the finest in the world. They start at $21,000!

Mike Spatacco says simple and from the heart always works.

"The best gift is usually a picture and something that doesn't cost a lot of money and it's thoughtful," said Mike Spatacco of Gladwyne.

Mandell says aside from gadgets, watches, and clothing, allowing fathers to take a day to rest and relax, is one of the best gifts a father can get. "It's important to realize we all work very hard and everyone needs a day just to themselves," said Mandell. She suggests buying your loved one a gift certificate to a salon or spa.
