Old City Hotel Using UV Rays To Zap Germs

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - An international hotel chain is in the process of equipping all of its properties with high-tech cleaning devices to ensure your room is close to germ free as possible. An old city hotel got a head start and has been using the gadgets since the beginning of the year.

"It will beep to let you know 10 seconds is up."

Wearing protective glasses and holding an ultra violet sterilization wand, Jessica Morris the General Manager of the Best Western Plus Independence Park Hotel started with a door handle holding the device over it for 10 seconds to get rid of germs on "high touch points" then moved on to the next.

"On the light fixtures, telephones, even on furniture." She says the UV wand as well UV inspection lights, easy wipe remote controls, and pillow and blanket wraps are extra precautions.

The old fashion elbow grease method is done first.

"We have room attendants that clean the room with Windex, Scrubbing Bubbles, the all purpose cleaner, the anti-bacterial cleaner."

Best Western's I Care Clean program will be in place at its more than 2,000 properties in north America by the end of the year.
