Police Investigate Homicide In Wilmington, Delaware

By Robin Rieger

WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS) – Twenty-four-year-old Monique Boyce was fatally shot in what police are calling a home invasion on North Madison Street in Wilmington, Delaware Wednesday morning.

At around 1:30 a.m., police say Boyce was shot in the upper torso while holding her newborn baby boy. She was found in the basement. Her 4-year-old son was also in the home. Both children were unharmed. Police were alerted to the crime when her 25-year-old boyfriend, who was also shot, jumped out a window to get help.

"Entry was made through the rear of the house here. The male subject was shot and wounded and apparently fled out of a second floor window. He approached a police officer about four blocks from the scene," said Wilmington Police Chief Michael Szczerba.

That location was the McDonalds in the 800 block of West 4th Street where crews were still cleaning the pavement Wednesday afternoon. Boyce was the manager and had worked there for five years.

"For this girl to have this baby, she's trying, she's doing everything she can, it's just not fair," said family friend Walter Wise.

Neighbors showed us the flyer police are circulating hoping for leads from the public. They have no suspects in custody.
Szczerba says police are trying to determine if the home invasion at is connected to a car found on the sidewalk at 9th and Grant 20 minutes earlier with 26- year-old William Pennewell of New Castle inside. He had been shot and died at the hospital.

Szczerba says both men had a several things in common.

"Drugs, weapons, extensive criminal history, being on probation being presently out on extensive bail or being recently released," said Szczerba.

Grief counselors were made available to Boyce's family members and coworkers by Mcdonalds. In a company statement, Boyce was described as an excellent employee who will be missed.
